In the upcoming Veeam Backup & Replication v9.5 release, Veeam announced some new features. Veeam B&R 9.5 should be available this year as an intermediate version.

What’s new in Veeam B&R 9.5? Subscribe to the official Veeam Availability Suite 9.5 page. New release will allow you to use storage snapshot from Nimble Storage and restore or migrate anything from on-premises to Azure. Basically, you optimize resource allocation to drive scalability and minimize cost.

Nimble Storage:

Storage snapshots are an everyday part of the modern data center regardless if you’re the virtualization administrator or the storage professional. The storage integration will complete the existing with EMC, HP and NetApp constructors and confirm the rumor of a support not for a big name (at least not one of the biggest), but a promising new storage vendor.

Nimble Integration will allow:

  • Schedule the creation of Nimble storage snapshots containing application-consistent VM images, and storage snapshot replication orchestration,
  • Restore from Nimble storage snapshots or their Replicated Copies (entire VM, guest files and application items),
  • Backup from Nimble storage snapshots or their Replicated Copies.

With Veeam Explorer for Storage Snapshots and Veeam Backup from Storage Snapshots, IT will be able to meet the Recovery Time and Point Objectives (RTPO) of the business. Array-based snapshots reduce the impact from data protection activities on the virtual production environment freeing system resources to further enable the virtualization of highly transactional VMs.

Veeam Explorer for Storage Snapshots allows to directly restore from the native Nimble snapshots (by using native snapshot scheduling engine, or Veeam) while benefitting from many of the restore options that Veeam provides.

The integration between Veeam and Nimble gives IT Pros the ability to quickly standup sandbox environments directly from storage snapshots, or their replicated copies. This also allows development teams access in a fenced off environment to test their code against real production data using the full performance of primary storage arrays.

Cloud restore:

The second feature announcement of new Veeam Availability Suite 9.5 brings the full integration of the previously released stand-alone feature, Direct Restore to Microsoft Azure. This new, fully integrated feature provides businesses with the ability to optimize resource allocation to drive scalability and minimize cost — to efficiently extend Availability to the hybrid cloud. A user will be able to restore or migrate anything (Windows- and Linux-based VMs, physical servers or endpoints) to Microsoft Azure directly from within the Veeam Backup & Replication server on-premises.

More information about Cloud restore to Microsoft Azure.

We think that the release date will depend mostly on Windows Server 2016 RTM availability and also the next release of vSphere (6.1 or 6.5).

  6. […] Veeam Agent for Windows is a tool that backs up physical Windows systems such as a workstation, a server or machines in the public cloud. This tool creates image-based backups that are stored in .VBK format, the same as in Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Agent for Linux. There are three editions: “Free“, “Workstation” and “Server” being released that include enterprise features such as Application Aware Processing (VSS), flexible scheduling and retention options all while being able to backup directly to Cloud Connect repositories.
