Installing SQL Standard for Veeam B&R

This step-by-step article describes how to install Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Standard SP3 database and the most common SQL Server components between computers that are running SQL Server. You can follow this post to move database from SQL Express to SQL Standard too. The steps that are described in this article assume that you will not move the master, model, tempdb or msdb system databases. The steps provide different options for you to transfer logins and the most common components contained in the master and msdb databases. I like to use C: partition for SQL engine and D: partition to host database, temp files, log files and backup files (MDF and LDF). Here I need to deploy a SQL database for Veeam B&R 9 but it can be used for other applications.

In Veeam Backup & Replication v8 and v9 and higher the DBConfig Utility can be used to change the DB that Veeam is attempting to connect to, rather than editing the registr: Veeam Help Center.

For information about system requirements for Microsoft SQL with Veeam B&R , see the “Veeam User Guide” .

Running the Installer:

Important: You must install Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 before installing SQL Server. Then you have to run the installation file “SQL Server Standard 2012 R2 Standard”. Download Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 2012. The SQL Server Installation Center screen will be displayed. In this screen, you can click “Installation” on the left panel then click “New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation”.

Installation Wizard:

Once setup support rules is passed, click on “Next” button.

In the Instance Configuration screen, define a name for the instance. This is the name for your SQL Server. Here “VEEAMSQL2012” for Veeam Backup server. Click “Next” to continue. New installation: When it is a new installation, there is no SQL Server present in your system yet. In this case, select Default instance. There is no need to change anything else in the screen. At the bottom of the screen, you can see if there are already other SQL Server instances present. When this is a new installation in a system where no SQL Server is present yet, this part of the screen is empty. Installation new instance: When there are already existing SQL Server installations present, you have to select Named instance and define a name in the box next to it, for example “VeeamBackup”. The name defined here has to be unique and cannot be the same as the name of the other instances that are already present on your system. The field Instance ID will be filled automatically and you do not have to change this manually. At the bottom of the screen, you can see if any other instances are present. For more security I use “D:” partition to host instance.

SQL Wizard

Click on “Next” button.

Then you can define which account you want to use for starting the SQL Server services. For a standard installation, accept the data as suggested in the screen. I recommand you using a service account. Keep in mind that when you select a user for which the password regularly changes, you will also have to change the password in the services every time. If you forget to change the password in the services, the services cannot be started and you will not be able to use the SQL Server until you have updated the password in the services, and have started the services. Depending on the account selected at Account Name, you have to enter the corresponding password at Password. Click on “Next” button.

SQL Wizard

In “Database Engine Configuration” and under the “Server Configuration” tab, define how you would like to log on to the SQL Server. I recommand you select “Mixed Mode (SQL Server authentication and Windows authentication)”. Type your password at “Enter password” and “Confirm password” for SA account. Then you can add Microsoft Domain account. Click on “Data Directories” tab.

SQL Wizard

I prefer to use “D:” partition to host database, temp files, log files and backup files (MDF and LDF). Click on “Next” button.

Click on “Next” button.

Now that your database is up, you can deploy Veeam B&R software and use the new instance. By default the option “Use existing instance of SQL Server” will be checked, and Veeam wizard will detect the existing database in use. For information, you can follow this guide to install your Veeam B&R 9 server: Step by Step Guide Veeam B&R 9 Installation. Basically, if you need to migrate your SQL Express Server to Standard Server you can apply this guide. Detache the database from your SQL Express then move the database files to the new server and attach it by specifying the new location of the moved file or files.
