Vanguard Summit 2019 – New Universal License!

Hi! This week, I participate at #VanguardSummit 2019 in Prague as Veeam Vanguard & Data Protection Team Leader for Monaco Digital – Avangarde. What is the #VeeamVanguard program? So many Vanguards, so many visions! About 60 Vanguards are here, from all over the world talking about community, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365, Veeam Availability Suite v10, new VCSP platform, new licensing model (VUL), Veeam Availability Orchestrator, etc. In the upcoming Veeam Availability Suite v10 release (Veeam Backup & Replication 10 and Veeam One 10), Veeam announced some new features. Note: Veeam B&R version 10 should be available in the last quarter of 2019. The goal of this post is to inductive new Veeam Universal License model… “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending” (C. S. Lewis). Veeam Universal License has full functionality across products, and moves with the workload, simplifying license management for the customer.

Veeam Universal License – VUL:

More of the “why” Veeam has gone to VUL:

With this new licensing model, Veeam helps customers meet the demands of their ever-changing environments through the Veeam Universal License (VUL). This portable subscription license simplifies licensing into one fully featured Universal license that includes the Enterprise Plus feature set. With Universal licensing, customers can protect any workload: whether virtual, physical, cloud, enterprise application or file shares. Licensing can be a challenge when leveraging on-prem and Cloud resources. Hard to license per-socket in Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure. Customers will be able to purchase Veeam Universal Licenses in bundles of 10 or more licenses and then use those licenses to protect what they need when their needs change. When a workload is no longer needed, the license can be re-purposed to another workload quickly and easily. So no matter how their environments morph. From On-Premises to Cloud, from VMware to Nutanix, from Physical to Virtual to Cloud, this licensing solution pivots to meet their needs.

Why Veeam VUL:

To make your Disaster Recovery licensing as portable as your workloads are:

The Veeam Universal License makes licensing simpler by simplifying editions for easier adoption and management and an overall improvement in portability. VUL will offer fully-featured capability at the Enterprise Plus feature set for Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Backup & Replication.

VUL will make it simple for customers to calculate their license needs. This means no more complex weighting table and no more fractions. Every workload uses 1 license instance! Simple!

Not all Veeam subscription-based products will leverage Veeam Universal License yet. These include:

  • Veeam Agent for Oracle Solaris and IBM AIX, which is targeted to be offered through VUL with the release of version 10,
  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365,
  • Veeam Availability Orchestrator,
  • Veeam Management Pack for System Center.

Licensing simplified:

Now, Veeam is simplifying this completely, as you can see in the table above. Now Veeam will offer a single universal license for subscription that consumes one single license. Every workload type, whether it’s a VM, a cloud VM, physical server, application server, or, starting with v10, a front-end capacity pack for NAS, will require 1 license. One change to note from the upper table and the enterprise plus column is around workstations. Going forward we will be licensing workstations in packs of three. So one universal license will protect three workstations.

Per-socket licensing is not going away. There will be no change in pricing, and there are no plans to require per-socket customers to upgrade to subscription. They do not need to migrate from per socket to the Veeam Universal License, but they can if they would like. The per-socket license will continue to be offered in all three editions – Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus.
