Recently, I had a global backup error for one of my customer with Veeam Backup & Replication 9. We are seeing the following error which is causing backups to fail: “Error: Backup Console version ‘9.0.0.1491’ is not compatible with Installer service on host…“. Came across this error recently which is thankfully an easy fix but there is not a lot out there, the following is the error and the fix.

The Best Practices guide for Veeam Backup & Replication 9 is now available, it was developped by Veeam architects. This guide is intended for Backup Administrators or Consultants managing Veeam Backup & Replication on a daily basis. Most sections of this guide assume you already have hands on experience with Backup & Replication, and will serve as an “advanced user guide”, meaning that more basic usage information, system requirements and the like must be found in User Guide in Veeam Helpcenter. Service providers delivering BaaS and DRaaS with Veeam Cloud Connect should refer to the corresponding Veeam Cloud Connect Reference Architecture.

Update 2 for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.0 has been generally available for a week now, and Veeam has not much to report except one upgrade problem that seems fairly common. You can find more information about the release here. If you have minimal possible SQL permissions on the Veeam service account (“db_datareader” and “db_datawriter” roles only), then the service will not have enough privileges to make the required updates to the configuration database, causing it to fail to start after the upgrade. Veeam has tested and confirmed that temporarily lifting the role to “db_owner” allows the upgrade to complete. However, there were also a couple of users who said they had to grant sysadmin role (as “db_owner” was not enough), these cases have been investigated by Veeam so you can read more of this article!

VMware has released a big patch for ESXi 6.0 a few days ago which addresses many nasty outstanding issues, including the most recent CBT issue with taking quiesced VM snapshots with VMware Tools VSS, as well as a few PSOD conditions. Especially useful for Veeam B&R that leveraging VMware Changed Block Tracking (CBT) data supplied (Backup and Replicas of virtual machines running on ESXi 6.0.x).
