Step by Step Guide Veeam B&R 9.5 U1 Upgrade

Veeam released Veeam Backup and Replication 9.5 Update 1 RC, which contains one significant improvement: VMware vSphere 6.5 support! One time your Veeam Backup Server will be updated, you can backup Virtual Machines running on VMware vSphere 6.5. Basically, you can contact Veeam Support to get your hands on the Update 1 build of version 9.5 with vSphere 6.5 support (open a case at veeam.com to get and download the Release Candidate). Note: The RC version is only for testing. In the word from @Gotstev, Veeam told they also made a big step towards high-resolution monitors support – and while there’s still work to be done, you will notice that the UI became actually usable on DPI settings above 100%. This did require changing the UI font, resizing all dialogs and adjusting placement for some UI controls – so you will notice slightly different UI look after installing the update. Please do let Veeam Support know if you spot any UI inconsistencies brought by these changes that we may have missed so that we could correct those in the GA code.

This first technical article in 2017 provides a step by step guide to install Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 1 (Veeam Backup and Replication 9.5 Update 1 Upgrade). If you need to upgrade your Veeam Backup Server (v8 or v9) you can follow this article.

For more security:

The first step is to realize a configuration backup of Veeam server (“Configuration Backup” menu on the screenshot below) and SQL database backup. If the Veeam Backup Server is deployed on a Virtual Machine, execute a backup of this VM with Veeam B&R or a snapshot.

When the backup is done, you can close Veeam software and restart the Windows server (reboot). Basically, I recommend you to stop properly the 6 Veeam services before upgrading (services.msc).

Running the Installer:

Veeam B&R 9.5 U1 Upgrade: You have to run the installation file “Setup.exe”.

Installation Wizard:

Once wizard is launched, click on “Next” button.

Veeam will prompt to install the upgrade, click “Install”.

The upgrade took about few minutes to complete.

Once the upgrade completed, a prompt appeared to finalize the installation. Click on “Finish” button.

Post Reboot:

When the upgrade is done, I recommend you to restart properly the Windows server (reboot).

Once the reboot completes and Veeam B&R software has been opened, a prompt will appear to update all distributed components (especially Mount Server and vPower NFS). Click on “Apply” button.

Finally, when all components have been upgraded, you can click on “Finish” button.

Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 1 does not require new job creation or any architecture changes for your existing backups and replication to work. If there are dedicated Veeam proxy servers in the environment, now is a good time to upgrade those servers, otherwise, Veeam is now ready to use. Version: 9.5.0.802. I recommend you to execute active full backup to benefit from new VMware CBT mechanism.
