Veeam Backup & Replication v10 – 4 major features

In the upcoming Veeam Availability Suite v10 release (Veeam Backup & Replication 10 and Veeam One v10), Veeam announced some new interesting features. First, based on actual v10 features readiness, Veeam is moving some of them into 9.5 Update 3, so that they don’t have to sit and wait until they are done implementing the last feature. This means we are going to get some of the v10 goodness much sooner. Until awaiting the release, here is a review of Veeam Backup & Replication v10 with the following 4 major features…

Veeam Availability Suite 10

Support for physical computers backup by fully integrating of Veeam Agents for Windows and Linux into the Veeam Backup & Replication. This includes automated agent deployment and job management – bringing the same experience Veeam provides today for virtual machines to the physical workstations, servers and failover clusters! Many of Systems Administrators and Engineers have been asking them about this functionality for a long time, but Veeam wanted to polish the agents as a part of standalone free offering first before integrating them into the product. Veeam CDP, the new Continuous Data Protection technology that is best compared to our current replication functionality, except it allows to achieve recovery point objectives (RPO) – maximum acceptable data loss in case of disaster – of mere seconds and without using VMware snapshots, thus not impacting protected workloads. Veeam achieves this by using the new VMware technology called vSphere API for I/O filtering (VAIO), which is VMware-supported way to tap into VM’s I/O stream. This capability changes the game because until now, Veeam’s competition required either the use of agents inside of the protected Virtual Machines or some dirty hacks explicitly unsupported by VMware. Support for file shares and network attached storage (NAS) backup. This was another huge request from Veeam’s customer base, as it’s not uncommon for the enterprises to have 10x more unstructured data than VMs. Finally, Veeam Backup and Replication v10 will be able to protect those SMB (CIFS) and NFS shares with a scalable disk-to-disk backup and numerous restore options, including share state rollback following the ransomware attack.

And finally, in Veeam B&R v10, Veeam is extending his existing Scale-out Backup Repository with the new Archive Tier, which allows you to automatically drip older backups into a cheap storage designed for data archiving (such as object storage). It is going to make Veeam truly storage-agnostic, allowing you to use any storage system at all for archiving those GFS full backups – including Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier and Microsoft Azure blob storage (assuming your bandwidth allows).
