Step by Step Guide Veeam B&R 9.5 U4b Upgrade

Yesterday, Veeam released Veeam Backup and Replication 9.5 Update 4b, which contains some significant improvements: VMware vSphere 6.7 U3 support, Dell EMC Unity OE version 4.5 support, Microsoft Windows 10 May 2019 Update and Microsoft Windows Server version 1903 support as guest VM and others… This build is fully supported by Veeam technical support, who is standing by to assist all early adopters. If nothing unexpected pops up (especially around 3rd party platform updates), Veeam B&R Update 4b should hopefully be the last version 9.5 build. The next planned release vehicle is version 10, which goes into the private beta later this month, and is expected to be shipped before the end of this year. You can learn more about Veeam Backup & Replication v10 new features here.

This technical article provides a step by step guide to upgrade Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 4a (build 9.0.0.1715 or later prior to installing this update) to Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 4b build be version 9.5.4.2866 (Veeam Backup and Replication 9.5 U4b Upgrade). If you need to upgrade your Veeam Backup Server (v8 or v9) you can follow this article.

For more security:

The first step is to realize a configuration backup of Veeam server (“Configuration Backup” menu on the screenshot below) and SQL database backup. If the Veeam Backup Server is deployed on a Virtual Machine, execute a backup of this VM with Veeam B&R or a snapshot.

Veeam Menu

When the backup is done, you can close Veeam software and restart the Windows server (reboot). Basically, I recommend you to stop properly the 6 Veeam services before upgrading (services.msc).

Running the Installer:

Veeam B&R 9.5 U4b Upgrade: You have to run the installation file “VeeamBackup&Replication_9.5.4.2866.Update4b”.

Installation Wizard:

Once wizard is launched, click on “Next” button.

Click on “Install” button.

The upgrade took about few minutes to complete.

Once the upgrade completed, a prompt appeared to finalize the installation. Click on “Finish” button.

Post Reboot:

When the upgrade is done, I recommend you to restart properly the Windows server (reboot).

Once the reboot completes and Veeam B&R software has been opened, you can update all distributed components (especially Mount Server and vPower NFS) via “BACKUP INFRASTRUCTURE” menu.

Select servers to update and click “Apply” button.

Finally, when all components have been upgraded, you can click on “Finish” button.

Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 4b does not require new job creation or any architecture changes for your existing backups and replication to work. If there are dedicated Veeam proxy servers in the environment, now is a good time to upgrade those servers, otherwise, Veeam is now ready to use. Version: 9.5.4.2866.

I recommend you to execute Active Full backup to benefit from the new backup mechanism.

As a reminder, this update focuses on the new platform support, notably:

    • Windows 10 May 2019 Update and Windows Server version 1903 as guest VMs and for installation of Veeam Backup & Replication and its components,
    • Windows 10 May 2019 Update support by Veeam Agent for Windows 3.0.2 (the new agent version that is shipped as a part of the update),
    • Linux kernel version 5.0 support by Veeam Agent for Linux 3.0.2 (the new agent version that is shipped as a part of the update),
    • Support for RHEL 8, CentOS 8, Oracle Linux 8 and openSUSE Leap 15.1 in the B&R agent management functionality,
    • vCloud Director 9.7 support.
