Monitor your Veeam Agents from Veeam B&R console

One very interesting thing with Veeam Agent is the ability to monitor the agents via your centralized Veeam Backup & Replication console. You need to plan to install Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 1 (version 9.5.0.823) so that you can manage/track these jobs from your console. Here’s a guide on how once you have Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 1 installed, you can monitor agents from the console or add the existing agents to the console for monitoring. When you install Veeam Agent for Windows on your physical workloads (server or workstation), you need to choose a target for your backups (local target as a USB key, CIFS as a NAS etc.). To monitor your Veeam Agents from Veeam B&R console, you have to point the agents to a Veeam B&R Repository by specifying Veeam Backup server name or IP address then select the Backup Repository. Basically, you have to specify the personal credentials:

It will change the license back to free and allow Veeam B&R to manage the license for you. From Veeam Backup & Replication console, you can see the job appears in the main “Backup & Replication” window (new menu “Agents”). Job management i.e. backup configuration distribution is currently not supported. You can set repository permissions up, monitor job activity, manage encryption, use backup throttling or rely on global email notification in VBR console.

So, you can back into Veeam B&R console, click on “Start” menu \ “Licenses”, and then added your license file. You can see “Agent for Windows” menu appears next to “Backup & Replication” menu. Inside, you can check Veeam Agents licenses used for servers and workstations and check the support expiration date.

Finally, you can back into that physical server and configure the backup. Then it displayed application-aware processing settings as it should etc.

New Veeam Agents for Windows and Linux will be supported and licensed per agent. Veeam Agent for Windows will be available soon and Veeam Agent for Linux is already released. There are three editions: “Free“, “Workstation” and “Server” being released that include enterprise features such as Application Aware Processing (VSS), flexible scheduling and retention options all while being able to backup directly to Cloud Connect repositories. The most important here is that this covers physical workloads (physical server) as well by way of the Server version… Here’s an update on the upcoming Veeam releases for the next few weeks for your planning purposes. Veeam’s QC currently has the release candidate builds of Update 2 for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 and Veeam Agent for Windows 2.0 in hand, and are starting the full regression test cycle. If all goes well, they should have the RTM builds around mid-April. This is when the support will start pilot deployments of both products as usual – they will be reaching out to those of you with support cases open on the issues these updates address. And barring any showstoppers, both releases should become generally available around late-April or early-May. Windows agent is actually a bit more “ready”, however it is dependent on the Update 2 because of the integration with Veeam backup repositories (and now also cloud repositories) so it cannot be released before said update (from the word of Gostev).
